Wealth Washed is an Emmy-nominated documentary that explores the growing idea of Michigan as a future “climate haven” due to its abundant freshwater resources and relative resilience to climate change. The film examines how increasing interest in the Great Lakes region is attracting new residents, investors, and developers, while raising concerns about affordability, displacement, and environmental justice. Through the stories of local residents, experts, and community leaders, Wealth Washed highlights the tension between climate migration and gentrification, asking who will benefit from Michigan’s water wealth and who may be left behind as communities transform. The documentary challenges viewers to consider how access to freshwater and climate resilience can reshape neighborhoods, economies, and social equity across the region.
